William C. “Bill” Brunton, 81, of Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away Thursday afternoon, September 25, 2025, in Fort Wayne.
He was born on May 8, 1944 in Lafayette, Indiana to Howard L. and Pauline P. (Pendleton) Brunton. Bill was united in marriage to Emily Clute on September 23, 1967, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lafayette, Indiana.
Bill proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era with the First Air Cavalry from 1965 until his honorable discharge in 1967. He received a Purple Heart during his service.
He was a member of St. Joseph Hessen Cassel Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville. He was also past president of the Heritage Lions Club. In his younger years, he was a Scout Leader and volunteered for Junior Achievement.
Bill retired from GTE/Verizon in 2004. At a young age, Bill developed a hobby which turned into a lifestyle which was called farming. At the age of 6 he, like many of his generation, was trusted with driving equipment and helping his dad on the family farm. This lifestyle continued to impact him throughout the remainder of his life.
Bill loved his family, and enjoyed coaching his children in baseball. He was known as Mr. Fix It, and remodeled many homes. He was a master of woodworking and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emily Brunton of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two sons, Brett (Dawn) Brunton and Ryan (Julie) Brunton both of Hoagland, Indiana; Emily’s family, Dana (Bob) Farrell of West Point, Indiana, Daryl (Terry) Clute of Lafayette, Indiana, David (Jane) Clute of Cicero, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Zachary (Brittany) Brunton, Josie (Branden) Hadaway, Alysha (Joel) Snider, Katelyn (Derek) Thiel, Gabriel Brunton, Jacob Brunton, and Taryn Stine; and nine great-grandchildren, Landon, Freddy, Owen, Layla, Aubrey, Eleanor, Lennon, Lainey, and one on the way.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at St. Joseph Hessen Cassel Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Ammer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Hessen Cassel Catholic Cemetery with military honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville along with the United States Army.
Family and friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. on September 30, 2025 at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials can be given to St. Joseph Hessen Cassel Catholic Church or the Heritage Lions Club.
