Vernon K. Abbott

Vernon K. Abbott, 89, of Carthage, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at his residence.

He was born on June 11, 1936, at home in Pleasant Mills, Indiana to the late Clark C. and Lola L. (Gerber) Abbott. Vernon was united in marriage to Betty A. Knavel on September 7, 1956, at the Nazarene Church in Decatur, Indiana.

He retired from Navistar (International Harvester) in Indianapolis following 31 years of service. Vernon was a life long farmer in Adams and Rush County.

Vernon was a longtime supporter and fan of the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame Football. He raised all types of animals on the farm over the years, and had a special spot for his Jersey cows and dogs.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Betty Abbott of Carthage, Indiana; daughter, Carolyn (Dean) Omori of Noblesville, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Abbott of Lewisville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Tony Abbott, Susan (Ron) Markle, and Laura Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Alena Brown, Aaron Brown, and Aayla Brown.

Vernon was preceded in death by his son, Randy L. Abbott; grandson-in-law, Trevor Brown; three siblings, Wendell Abbott, Patricia J. "Patsy" Bittner and Donald Abbott.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Indiana, with Pastor Douglas Ehrgott officiating.

Preferred memorials can be given to your local Humane Society.
