Robert R. "Bob" Springer

September 27, 1939 — August 12, 2026

Robert R. “Bob” Springer, 86, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.

He was born on September 27, 1939, in Decatur, Indiana, to the late Homer R. and Violet C. (Ritter) Springer. Bob was united in marriage to Frieda L. Ball on January 23, 1965, in Decatur, Indiana, and she preceded him in death on November 18, 2013. He then married Carolyn Crawford in December of 2016.

Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army as a PFC during the Korean War and was honorably discharged following his service.

He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur.

Bob worked at Decatur Casting as an inspector and grinder for 30 years before his retirement on November 30, 2001. Following his retirement, he occupied himself by working at Dollar General in Decatur, where he established continued friendships with not only coworkers but also customers.

A consummate tinkerer, he was able to bring many small motors “back to life”. He also transferred this skill into computers, a skill that many his age did not possess. Bob was able to maintain an active lifestyle throughout his life. He was an avid hiker who spent many days walking the trails in Decatur. He was so thankful for the investment in the trails around Decatur. As he aged, he also found yoga beneficial to his well-being. As much as he enjoyed staying busy, being with his family brought him the most enjoyment in life.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carolyn Springer of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Robin (Danny) Haines of Geneva, Indiana; daughter, Donna Springer of Geneva, Indiana; daughter, Sandy Smith of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Tamie (Mike Sprunger) Springer of Berne, Indiana; son, Robert R. “Bobby” (Jennie) Springer of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Betty J. Ball of Auburn, Indiana; sister, Linda S. Springer of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Calvin Springer of Decatur, Indiana; brother, John Springer of Decatur, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Virginia Sue “Ginny” Springer, in 1972 at the age of 4; two sisters, Martha Boothby and Phyllis J. West; two brothers, Jack Springer and Dennis Springer; and a grandson, Cordell Cornett.
