On Sunday evening, October 4, 2026, Philip L. Morgan peacefully completed his earthly journey at home, surrounded by his wife, Marjorie D. Morgan, and the family he loved so dearly. Philip’s life was one marked by faith, family, friendship, and gratitude for the simple blessings God placed before him. He was a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a brother and uncle, and a faithful friend to many.
Philip was born June 3, 1952, in Decatur, Indiana, to William A. Morgan and Esther (Kistler) Morgan. On November 2, 1973, Philip was united in marriage to Marjorie D. Amstutz at the 1st Missionary Church in Berne, Indiana.
Family was one of Philip’s greatest joys. He loved watching his grandchildren grow and took special pleasure in sharing their activities and accomplishments. Few things pleased him more than spending time on a golf course with friends and family or watching his grandchildren and sons-in-law play. To say Philip enjoyed golf would be an understatement. There wasn’t a golf course he wouldn’t attend on a regular basis if given the opportunity.
Philip also loved fishing and music. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica, singing, and, much to the delight of those around him, yodeling. These were more than hobbies to Philip. They were ways of sharing joy with the people around him.
Phil was a graduate of Bellmont High School in 1970 in Decatur, IN and additionally the Reppert School of Auctioneering. Throughout a varied and dedicated career, he worked in a wide range of industries before concluding his professional journey in 2018 with 16 years of service as an ad salesman for the Decatur Daily Democrat. His extensive work history includes positions at Decatur Industries, Legge Elevator, and House of White Birches, alongside roles in General Manufacturing, Centennial Wireless, Mike Anderson Chevrolet, and Alpine Water.
As an active member of the 1st Missionary Church in Berne, Indiana, he served the congregation in several capacities, including regularly singing in front of the church, serving as an usher for services, and teaching 5th and 6th grade boys in Sunday school. Beyond his church involvement, he was also an active member of the Berne Lions Club. He also participated in Rock Steady Boxing in Bluffton, IN where he developed friendships as he courageously battled Parkinson’s disease. In all this, he continued demonstrating the determination and perseverance that were part of his character.
Philip leaves behind his loving wife, Marjorie D. Morgan; his daughters, Kari J. Rayl (Jason) and Elizabeth A. Parkinson (Trent); his sister, Beth L. Mack; his brother-in-law, J. Stephen Amstutz; and Mary Carol Schwartz (Rev. Albert J. Schwartz).
His grandchildren, who brought him tremendous pride and happiness, Ayden Rayl (Hannah), Grace Rayl, Brayden Rayl, Elena Rayl, Ally Parkinson, and Jack Parkinson. He was also blessed with his great-granddaughter, Caroline Rayl, another generation of his family for him to love and enjoy.
Philip is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Justin L. Mack (Ashley), Jeff Amstutz, Chad Herschner, Brad Amstutz (Lana), James A. and Schwartz (Jen), and Rev. Rick Schwartz (Jamie), and their children, as well as extended family members and many friends gathered throughout the years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Esther L. Morgan, and his sister-in-law, Diane Amstutz.
Those who knew Philip will remember the sound of his music, his love for a good round of golf, time spent fishing, his devotion to family, and the way he enjoyed simply being among the people he loved.
While his family grieves his passing, they do so with the assurance of faith and the hope found in Jesus’ promise of eternal life. They are grateful that Philip was able to spend his final moments in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by the people who meant the most to him.
Philip’s presence will be greatly missed, but his influence will remain in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, extended family, and the many friends who were fortunate enough to know him.
A life well lived, a family deeply loved, and a faith that carries us home.
