Opal June Baumert

Opal June Baumert, 92, of Hoagland, Indiana, passed away on Thursday afternoon, May 29, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

She was born on June 22, 1932, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to the late Henry and Mildred Ruth (Dennis) Pflueger. June was united in marriage to William E. Baumert on August 19, 1950, and he preceded her in death on August 26, 2017.

June was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Payne, Ohio, where she served in various capacities.

She was a hairdresser and homemaker for many years, a valuable part of the family farm, making countless meals and wearing multiple hats. June also generously donated numerous hours to the Heritage High School Band for several years, assisting with fundraising events and activities.

She was gifted with her hands, enjoying sewing, quilting, and painting ceramics. During the summer months, she found joy in gardening and canning her produce. June loved to cook and bake for her family. She was very active in her grandchildren’s lives and attended many of their activities.

Survivors include her sons, Michael Baumert of Antwerp, Ohio, Larry (Karen) Baumert of Monroeville, Indiana, and Gregory (Lisa Ford) Baumert of Angola, Indiana; daughter, Nannette (Stanley) Hegerfeld of Hoagland, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Matt Baumert, Corey Baumert, Derek Baumert, William (Katie) Baumert, Andrew Baumert, Amy (Cole) Gutshall, Ashley (Bryan) Rumple, and Abby Hegerfeld; 20 great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

June was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Karen Baumert; grandson, Benjamin Baumert; two brothers, Art Pflueger and Gene Pflueger; and sister, Lois Finkhousen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at St. James Lutheran Church in Payne, Ohio, with Pastor Fred Meuter officiating. Burial will follow in Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville, Indiana, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Preferred memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Antioch Lutheran Church.
