Nyla J. Johnson, age 85, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 9:41 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, at her residence surrounded by her children singing her favorite hymns.
She was born on May 8, 1941, in Decatur, Indiana, to Glen E. and Irene M. (Peck) Girod, both of whom preceded her in death. Nyla was united in marriage to Richard D. Johnson on July 26, 1964, at Salem United Church of Christ. He preceded her in death on August 21, 2024.
Nyla was a member of Salem Magley Church and later attended Pleasant Mills United Methodist Church. She graduated from Monmouth High School in 1959. Nyla was a homemaker and also drove a school bus for Adams Central Community Schools for 24 years, retiring in 2007.
Nyla enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, and spending time with her family and friends. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured the many visits and memories made with those she loved.
Survivors include two sons, Delin R. (Denise) Johnson of Washington Court House, Ohio and Daryl B. (Kimberly) Johnson of Decatur, Indiana; three daughters, Julie A. (Chris) Knudsen of Decatur, Indiana, Jenny I. (Clay) Lemmon of Huntertown, Indiana, and Janel R. (Marc) Hemrick of Morrow, Ohio; four sisters-in-law, Carolyn Girod of Decatur, Indiana, Charlsie Girod of Decatur, Indiana, Susan Girod of Ossian, Indiana, and Patricia Jackson of Monroe, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, Evan (Callyn) Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Erin Johnson, Katie (Rob) Powell, Madison Johnson, Lydia (Luke) McConnell, Ben (Madison) Johnson, Ris Knudsen, Isaac Knudsen, Audrey (Noah) Sattison, Nathan (Kalaina) Lemmon, Clara Hemrick, and Gabriel Hemrick; and eight great-grandchildren.
Nyla was preceded in death by her grandson, Myles Hemrick; great-grandson, Timothy Johnson; and four brothers, Arno, Gery, Kent, and Ronald L. Girod.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2026, at Cornerstone Community Church in Decatur, Indiana, with Pastor John McCullough officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Magley Cemetery in Magley, Indiana.
Family and friends will be received from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, Indiana, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Preferred memorials may be made to Pleasant Mills United Methodist Church, Adams County Community Foundation, or Myles Ahead Animal Sanctuary and Rescue.
