Eric L. Gehrig, 77, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at his residence Wednesday morning, December 17, 2025.

He was born on February 1, 1948, in Decatur, Indiana, to Howard L. Gehrig and Anita (Lindemann) Gehrig, both of whom preceded him in death.

Eric, more commonly known as “Rick”, was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War and continuing his military career for more than 25 years. He retired in 1990 with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8) and was honorably discharged. His dedication to service was a defining part of his life.

He was a graduate of Decatur High School, Class of 1967, and later earned an Associate’s Degree from Troy State University in Alabama. Rick was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and V.F.W. Post 6236, and was also a member of American Legion Post #43 in Decatur.

In retirement, Rick truly enjoyed slowing down. He often said he enjoyed “doing as little as possible,” spending time visiting local flea markets and collecting various items. Rick spent his later years taking in abandoned animals, loving and caring for them.

He is survived by his son, David L. (Samantha) Gehrig of Michigan; one sister, Victoria (Jan) Nussbaum of Monroe, Indiana; and two brothers, Bill (Amber) Carpenter and Chris (Kelly) Carpenter, both of Decatur, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Wayne Carpenter.

In keeping with Rick’s wishes, no visitation or services will be held. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, at a future date, with military honors.

Preferred memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or American Legion Post #43.

Arrangements are by Zwick and Jahn Funeral Homes, Decatur, Indiana.
