Delbert Scheiman

December 12, 1939 — October 4, 2026

Delbert W. Scheiman, 86, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at home on October 4, 2026 at 10:20 p.m. surrounded by his loving family along with Pastor Berett Steffen.

Delbert was born on December 12, 1939, in Decatur, Indiana, the son of Franklin and Erna (Schueler) Scheiman. He was united in marriage to Donna (Buuck) on April 30, 1967, at Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim in Decatur. Delbert shared a rare connection with his beloved wife Donna: they were born on the same day, December 12, and celebrated many shared birthdays together throughout their 59 years of marriage.

Delbert was best known for his warm, winning smile and easy laughter. He had a gift for making others feel welcome and cherished, and he lit up when his family visited. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He saw the good in everyone and encouraged others to do the same, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and compassion. His example taught those around him the importance of love, acceptance and encouragement.

Delbert was a fourth-generation farmer who took great pride in carrying on the Scheiman family legacy. He dedicated his life to preserving the heritage and integrity of the family farm, embracing stewardship practices that protected the environment for future generations. In his later years, Delbert enjoyed collecting die-cast tractors and making his own model farm equipment, reflecting his deep love of farming.

Delbert worked at International Harvester for 25 years until it closed in 1983. He then embarked on a career at the Decatur Post Office, retiring in 2003 after 15 years of service. In conjunction with his employment at Harvester and the post office, he served as not only an employee, but also a board member for Echo German Insurance Company for 35 years. Never one to turn away from duty, Delbert also served in the United States Army Reserves from 1960 to 1966, being honorably discharged following his service.

He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, where he served as deacon, trustee, and officer of the Men’s Club.

Delbert will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family and community remain an inspiration.

Survivors include his wife, Donna (Buuck) Scheiman of Decatur; and his four daughters: Jani (Daniel) Thieme of Hoagland, Indiana; Rebecca (Shaun) Scholer of Carmel, Indiana; Catherine (Mark) Masloob of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Emily (Jeff) Pass of New Palestine, Indiana. He is also survived by his sister, Arlene Preader of Scottsville, Kentucky.

Delbert’s legacy also includes nine grandchildren—Alexis (Jon) Lane, Erika (Andrew) Callison, Benjamin Scholer, Anna Scholer, Audrey (Faven) Foster, Breann (Colton) Roberts, Isabelle Roberts, Delaney Pass, and Lillian Pass—and four great-grandchildren: Brecken Lane, Cooper Lane, Grayson Foster and Alana Foster. He is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Melody, Evelyn and Elizabeth Masloob. He was preceded in death by his parents.
