David E. Hakes

David E. Hakes, 53, of New Haven, Indiana, passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 17, 2025, in New Haven surrounded by his family.

He was born on March 22, 1972 in Decatur, Indiana to the late Paul and Virginia (Taylor) Hakes.

Dave was united in marriage to Cindy Stier on October 19, 2002 in Fort Wayne and she survives.

Dave was a partner in the construction business known as Blue Apple Construction, which was founded in 2018. Dave was a skilled carpenter with experience spanning 30 years.

Dave was a deeply devoted husband and connected friend to many. He looked forward to his annual Elk Hunting trip to Colorado each fall, last year was the first hunt he missed in over 20 years. He was a former coach in Decatur for the Bellmont High School Track and Field team. He continued participating and coaching until his illness forced him to retire. Dave was committed to helping others, which he exemplified by carrying out his volunteering activities in his fellowship with the Lord. This commitment extended to not only on construction projects, but also in forming bonds and mentorship with many of the student athletes.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Hakes of New Haven, Indiana; sister, Jennifer (Ron) Keller of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Deb (Erik) Schnepp of Michigan, sister, Peggy (Joe) Moore of Goshen, Indiana; many nieces and nephews along with his grandbabies; and his favorite four-legged buddies, Sophie, Bella, and Snowy.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Dave will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with Heath Hostettler, officiating. Burial will follow in Springhill (Backesto) Cemetery, Monroe, Indiana.

Friends and family will be received from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and one hour prior to services on Wednesday also at the funeral home.

Preferred memorial can be given to Humane – Ft. Wayne or plant a tree to honor Dave on the funeral home’s website.
